The customer had previously had their exterior vinyl window frames painted black by hand, using one of Kelly Moores High quality paint, but also one of their most Viscous products by far, and way too runny to be used for the purpose they were trying to achieve. Ontop of the numerous runs and paint sags, the windows had also experienced some leaking a few years prior and the contractor who fixed the leaks had used non paintable silicon caulking (which is the right product for him to use at the time), it just means I had to use a bonding primer everywhere he used him silicoln caulking, most of which had failed by now, years after it had been applied with no paint to help protect it from the elements.
I did my best to maske the stucco surrounding the viynl window seals so as to not get any overspray on the body of the home. I was contracted to apply two new coats of high quality exterior paint on 17 windows surrounding the home. Scuff sanding the windows was included to help promote mechanical adhesion but it would take alot more work, time, and money to sand out all the runs from the previous painter. I did however decided to take it upon myself to sand down the window frames in the front of the house by the entry way and front doors, areas where something like that would be most noticeable. I spend a few extra hours using my electric sander to get s somewhat smooth surface, then I used a Direct to Metal bonding primer to protect the bare metal I had sanded down to. Then once all masking was complete and sanding dust was cleaned away, I applied my two coats using my fine finish HVLP sprayer on the viynl and metal window frames near the entryway of the front door.
We did have some close calls when it came to the weather, but I always keep a $10 thermometer and barometer I bought of amazon so I can always make sure I am within proper range of temperature and humidity before I start spraying.
This was another repeat customer and the were once again very happy and have actually contracted me to paint the entirety of their exterior this time but as one this moment with the weather the project has been post poned until march unfortunately. It is always best to make sure you are working within proper conditions, with proper equipment, and with the proper paints and primers. So if it takes a few weeks of a delay to ensure a long lasting durable product I can be proud of then I am more than happy to wait.
